At the beginning of the story, the main character, Beatrice Prior, has to choose one of five factions to belong to when she reaches the age of 16. Her decision at her initiation will determine her path for the rest of her life and decide for her whether she will ever interact with or even see her family again.

Beatrice unexpectedly chooses the faction “Dauntless,” a sect which thrives on thrill-seeking and dangerous behavior. This shocks her parents and alienates her from her family although her mother is secretly thrilled for reasons of her own. She immediately changes her name, a symbol of the new path she has chosen for herself. Unknown to the others in her faction, the testing that she engaged in before the initiation was inconclusive as to where she belongs, something virtually unheard of in this world and which would brand her as an outcast if anyone knew. Throughout the book, she hides her secret as chaos and anarchy reign as her family, as well as her new existence, is threatened.
