Check it out:
African Penguin by Lulu and Tee
A series of three children's picture books from South Africa
Written by Linda Fellowes (aka Lulu) and Illustrated by Theresa Acker (aka Tee)
Based on true stories about endangered species, these thoughtfully created books highlight real threats to animals.

Peter, Pamela and Percy in the Big Spill

The story of the Treasure Oil Spill and the three penguins that wore tracking devices on their epic swim home.

Eric in It's a Piece of Cake

The story of Eric the Baboon who gets burnt by a veld fire and his passion for carrot cake.

Nicole in The Surf is my Turf

The story of Nicole the Great White Shark who gets caught in a trek net while hunting.
This book was commissioned by Save Our Seas Foundation to educate children about the Great White; its diet, the food chain and the threats to this magnificent creature.

The African Penguin books have a great educational and environmental awareness component to them and children who love animals would certainly enjoy these books.
"Fun and educational with a touch of magic," the stories are told in rhyme and are aimed at 3-7 year olds.
"Our aim is to educate children and engender a love of nature and a belief that we can all make a difference, while at the same time nurturing a love of books."
Incorporating photography of local scenery, all of the photographs used in the books were taken by Lulu in and around Cape Town, which give even greater authenticity to the stories.
Each book includes a fact page about the animal stating its height, weight, life expectancy, diet, etc.
